Raw Steel

Black & Smith Ironworks receives large lengths of steel that are typically 24’. We then cut these lengths into desired furniture parts and weld them together. Once welded, ground and drilled the steel is then cleaned with a rag. No further coating is applied.

Raw steel is recommended for indoor projects that will not be exposed to the climates.

Wet Paint

A paint coating that is sprayed or painted onto raw steel once all surfaces have been cleaned from grease and other contaminants. Wet paint is usually offered in matte, semi-gloss and full gloss (glossy). Here at Black and Smith Ironworks our standard wet paint finish is a matte black, however we are more than happy to apply any custom colours you would like.

Wet paint is recommended for outdoor projects that will be exposed to the climates or very humid areas.

Clear Coating

A coating that is sprayed or painted onto raw steel once all surfaces have been cleaned from grease and other contaminants. Unlike paint, clear coatings are transparent and allow you to see the raw steel whilst protecting the steel surface from rusting.

Clear coating is recommended for outdoor projects that will be exposed to the climates or very humid areas.

Bees Wax

A coating that is applied by hand with a lint free rag. Wax is applied to smooth surfaces that have been cleaned of grease and other contaminants. Similar to clear coating, wax coatings are transparent and will protect steel surfaces from rusting. Wax coated surfaces will need be re-applied periodically.

Wax is recommended for indoor projects that will not be exposed to the climates.
